What things are you saying to yourself?

How successful you will be at anything is always going to be dependent on the words and beliefs about yourself you have stored in your subconscious mind…


But they certainly didn’t teach me that at school! How about you?

Didn’t think so.

So, how often do you say to yourself

‘I couldn’t do that’…

I could never do what they do’…

‘I’m not very good at that’…

Or simply…  ‘I can’t’

Well words like that make you weak. They have an immediate effect on your physiology, making you less able to do the task you’re setting out to do.

Don’t believe me?  Ok try this for size…

Get a friend or partner to stand with their arm out in front of them, keeping it strong, then get them to repeat over and over ‘I am weak and feeble… I can’t, I can’t, I can’t’

While they are repeating their mantra place your fingers on their forearm and push down. You should find it reasonably easy to push their arm down a certain amount.

Ok, now do the same thing while they repeat the words ‘I am strong and powerful, I CAN, I CAN, I CAN!!’

This time you can barely move their arm, right?

It’s astounding, but the words we say affect us more than we think.

I did this with my young son William a couple of years ago when he was learning to ride his bike without stabilisers. He was at the dinner table, upset because he couldn’t get the hang of it, and he kept saying ‘I can’t do it Daddy‘. I did this exercise with him, and as soon as he realised what an effect his words were having he was out in the garden, riding around, shouting ‘I CAN, I CAN’ at the top of his voice.

That was a magic moment! And if a 5 year old can do it, so can you!
